What is wealth screening and donor prospecting data?
Donor prospecting data is used to analyze and identify potential donors or donors that have more capacity to give to your organization. Prospecting data helps development teams and fundraisers segment prospects based on how likely they are to to give and how much they are able to give. Wealth screening & prospecting data helps answer key questions:
Is your next major donor hidden in our database?
Do your major donors have more capacity and motivation to give?
Do any of your major donors give to other organizations like ours?
Are any of your major donors at risk of churning?
Which donors are showing low engagement and need stewardship?

Run a Wealth Scan
To receive donor wealth and prospecting data, you'll need to conduct a scan. You can scan a single supporter or scan a filtered list of supporters.
Scan a single supporter
Access the Supporter profile > Actions > click Run prospect scan
Scan a list of supporters
From Supporters > Apply appropriate filters
Click Actions > click Run prospect scan
Improving scan results
Not all scanned donors will return successful scan results. This can happen when no matching prospect is found or if one was found but the confidence of that match was not high enough. You can increase the likelihood of successful scans by ensuring donors have some key contact data.

A scan requires a minimum amount of contact information to find a match:
First Name
Last Name
Zip/Postal
You can boost the likelihood and confidence level of a match by ensuring a supporter also has:
Phone
Email
State/Province
City
Country
A few more details about contact data and scan success:
Country and Postal Code
When only submitting the First Name
, Last Name
,and Postal Code
, the system will attempt to infer the City, State/Province and Country fields to search for a match. For best results, we recommended scanning donors that include a correct full mailing address. For best results, only include US or Canadian addresses—other countries cannot be searched, but may show up in results, if there is a US or Canadian match with high enough confidence.
Country data format
The accepted country field formats for a scan are listed below. It's a good idea to ensure valid country data prior to scanning a Supporter. Do not use punctuation.
Canada
CA
United States
US
USA
Address
Scan accuracy is improved when a Supporter's primary address represents their primary residence, rather than a business address. When a scan includes a business address it may skew the results by matching properties, holdings, or activity of the business rather than those of your donor.
☝️ Prospect scans are a billable feature
Prospect scans incur a 99¢ fee per successful scan. Learn more about scan fees below.
Wealth & Prospecting data
Donor wealth and prospecting data can be viewed and utilized across the Funraise platform, including from a Supporter's profile, when filtering Supporter lists, and when creating custom reports or dashboards in Fundraising Intelligence.
There are 13 wealth and prospecting data points that can be displayed for a supporter, we'll cover these in detail below. The configurations for scores are managed by Funraise and can not be adjusted.
An example of prospect data on a supporter's profile.
Prospect Score
The Prospect Score, also known as the Kindsight Score, tells you how likely a supporter is to give to your organization and how much they may be able to give.
On a scale of 1-4, with 4 being the highest, this score is a summary of several contributing factors including Propensity
, Affinity
, and Capacity
. These contributing factors are described in more detail below.
Score | Description |
4 | Strong | Very likely to give a large amount to you |
3 | Good | Likely to give a large amount to you |
2 | Fair | Somewhat likely to give a large amount to you |
1 | Weak | Unlikely to give a large amount to you |
Propensity Score
Propensity Score is a prospect’s inclination to give their time or money to philanthropic causes generally.
Score | Description |
4 | Strong | Very likely to give time or money |
3 | Good | Likely to give time or money |
2 | Fair | Somewhat likely to give time or money |
1 | Weak | Unlikely to give time or money |
Affinity Score
The Affinity Score tells you whether or not the donor is likely to make a gift to an organizations like yours. For example, does this donor make gifts to nonprofits that focus on health, the arts, or education, etc.
Your organization's affinity category is selected by Funraise using your organization's NTEE code (derived from your organization ID number). You can adjust your affinity category in your platform settings.
Score | Gifts to your affinity category |
4 | Strong | $1,000 and up |
3 | Good | $200 to $999 |
2 | Fair | $40 to $199 |
1 | Weak | $1 to $39 |
Capacity Score
The Capacity Score tells you a donor's estimated capacity to give to nonprofit causes over 5 years.
Score | Estimated 5 year capacity to give |
4 | Strong | $500,000 and up |
3 | Good | $2500,000 to $499,999 |
2 | Fair | $50,000 to $249,999 |
1 | Weak | $0 to $49,999 |
Two pieces of information are used to calculate the estimated capacity and range scores. The estimated 5 year capacity value is the highest of these two calculations:
Estimated Net Worth x 5%
Income x 10%
The solutions from these formulas are also available as data points:
Capacity Range High is the higher value.
Capacity Range Low is the lower value.
Engagement Score (RFM)
The Engagement Score (RFM) is a measure of the current relationship you have with your donor based off their donation data in Funraise.
Score | Description |
4 | Strong | Strong giving relationship |
3 | Good | Good giving relationship |
2 | Fair | Fair giving relationship |
1 | Weak | Weak giving relationship |
RFM stands for Recency, Frequency, and Monetary. These three scores are weighted equally to make up the overall Engagement Score (RFM).
Recency is based on a donor's last gift date to your organization
Frequency counts the total number of gifts that a donor has made to your organization
Monetary is the total amount of all donations a donor has given to your organization
The scores that make up each of these three calculations (Recency, Frequency, and Monetary) are used to determine the overall Engagement Score, although they are not available as an individual data points returned from a scan.
Recency | Last Donation (months) |
4 | Strong | 0 to 13 |
3 | Good | 14 to 25 |
2 | Fair | 26 to 37 |
1 | Weak | 37 and up |
Frequency | Number of gifts |
4 | Strong | 11 and up |
3 | Good | 7 to 10 |
2 | Fair | 3 to 6 |
1 | Weak | 0 to 2 |
Monetary | Total gift amount |
4 | Strong | $101,000 and up |
3 | Good | $76,000 to $100,99 |
2 | Fair | $51,000 to $75,599 |
1 | Weak | $0 to $50,999 |
☝️ Scanning for updated RFM data
When a supporter is scanned and successfully returns prospecting data, that data will remain the same until the donor is rescanned. The data is not live.
This is particularly important for Engagement (RFM) data. If a donor makes a donation in Funraise after they've been scanned, their RFM data will be out of date. You can rescan the donor to receive an updated RMF score.
Insights Category
The insights category compares two scores: Prospect Score
and your Engagement Score (RFM)
. The insight category helps segment supporters based on what these scores reveal about the donors. There are four categories.
Score | Description |
Distinguished Philanthropists | Major gift donors that donate to you cause but may have additional capacity. |
Hidden Gems | Prospects that have capacity and are already giving to other organizations. |
Your Champions | Donors to your cause that are not necessarily on the radar of other organizations. |
Not Now Prospects | Individuals that do not appear to be philanthropic with any organizations. |
These categories are defined by which quadrant the donor falls into when comparing both the Engagement (RFM) Score
and the Prospect Score
.
For example, a donor with an Engagement Score (RFM) of 1
and a Prospect Score of 4
is a Hidden Gem
because they have low giving engagement with your organization but have a high potential to give. This is the top left quadrant.

Planned Giving Score
Planned Giving Scores are determined by a number of factors, and allow you to have a quantitative rating to estimate how likely someone is to be a planned giving prospect for your organization. Indicators for this score include:
Age
Propensity Score
Affinity Score
Capacity Score
Insider Filings
Real Estate holdings
Donations and charitable activity
Score | Description |
4 | Strong | Very likely to be a planned giving candidate |
3 | Good | Likely to be a planned giving candidate |
2 | Fair | Somewhat likely to be a planned giving candidate |
1 | Weak | Unlikely to be a planned giving candidate |
Real Estate
Real estate estimates can provide another insight to a prospects total wealth. Two values are available to summarize real estate data.
Real Estate Count is the number of real estate holdings identified for the prospect.
Real Estate Value is the total value of real estate holdings identified for the prospect
☝️ Real Estate data is only available for properties in the United States.
Kindsight Donation Count & Donation Value
This data shows the total count and total amount of all charitable donations identified for this donor. Keep in mind, this is data that is available in Kindsight based on known charitable donations to any organization, not just donations to your organization.
Wealth scanning fees
Fees are incurred for each successful scan. A successful scan means that wealth and prospecting data was returned. A scan that does not return wealth and prospect data will not incur a fee. Wealth scan fees are billed monthly.
Fee per successful scan |
$0.99 |
☝️ 500 scan daily limit
A maximum of 500 supporters can be scanned in a 24 hour period. You can request an increase to this daily scan limit by contacting us.
FAQs
Where is prospecting data available?
Donor prospecting data is available for US and Canadian donors.
How often should a Supporter be rescanned?
When a supporter is scanned and successfully returns prospecting data, that data will remain the same until the donor is rescanned. To regularly surface new insights, we recommend scanning key Supporters every 6 to 9 months, but at least once every 12 months.
We'll cover this in more detail above, but one important reason you may want to rescan donors prior to donor outreach is to receive an updated and accurate Engagement score(RFM)
as this score takes into account any new donations in Funraise, since the last scan.
Are fees incurred when a donor is re-scanned?
Yes. Any scan that results in wealth data being successfully returned will incur a fee.
Do I need a Kindsight account to access this data?
No, you do not need a Kindsight account to access prospecting data. Funraise has partnered with Kindsight to make this data available for Funraise customers.
What if I already have a Kindsight account?
Funraise's donor prospecting data is not (yet!) an integration with your own Kindsight account. Funraise supporters are not synced with your Kindsight account. The configurations for scoring and weighting in Funraise are managed by Funraise and are not synced from your Kindsight account.
Where does data come from?
Prospecting data in Funraise is powered by our friends at Kindsight. Kindsight uses databases of publicly available data including demographic, wealth, and giving data. This data is then crunched and calculated by Kindsight, providing additional insights into individual's wealth, giving interest, and capacity.
How accurate is this data?
Kindsight (iWave) provides prospecting data to thousands of organizations and is one of the most trusted platforms for donor insights. The data that comes from public records is very accurate. From that data some scores and capacity estimates are generated by making assumptions based on those facts. The system is also designed to only return data when the confidence score of a match is high — so if a scan returns data for a supporter, it means there is a very good chance it's reliable.
